Laura Zinke - Presenter
Laura Zinke, a native of Arizona, has been an AP* Spanish teacher for 26 years. Laura has a Bachelor's degree from Northern Arizona University and a Masters from Middlebury College and is a Gifted Endorsed teacher in the State of Arizona. She has served as a reader and a Table Leader at the AP* Spanish Reading and currently serves as a Question Leader. Laura is a member of the AP* Spanish Test Development Committee and has been an AP* Faculty Consultant since 1994 presenting both weekend workshops and summer institutes. Laura has been a presenter at various regional and national Foreign Language and AP* conferences and is a former Fulbright Teacher exchange participant in Cordoba, Argentina.
AP Spanish Language/AP Spanish Literature and Culture Workshop
The first two days of this workshop are designed to familiarize teachers with the current AP Spanish Language Course and Exam. The course will provide sample materials and classroom activities relating to the 2012 exam. We will also explore and discuss the upcoming changes to the new AP Spanish Language and Culture Course that will take place in the 2013-2014school year. The last two days of this workshop will be dedicated to the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Course. Teachers will study carefully the new Course and Exam Description, review and prepare for the new item types and review and discuss the new additions to the reading list. Detailed information and best practices are discussed and shared to prepare students for the current AP Spanish Language Exam and for the new 2013 AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam. Participants will be asked to actively participate and share best practices with the entire group on a daily basis.

Using Vocabulary and Idiomatic Expressions.

Teaching AP Spanish Language through thematic units.

Using authentic literature in the AP Spanish Language class.

Integration of skills; how to develop presentational writing and speaking tasks in both the language and literature course.
•
Using projects in the classroom as a way to integrate and develop language skills.
•
Scoring the free-response sections of the exam; using 2012 student samples.
What participants should bring:

Thirty copies of a new idea or activity used last year in their language course
•
Thirty copies of an activity using literature in the classroom.
Monday and Tuesday: Review of AP* Spanish Language Exam and Course. Introduction to AP* Strategies. Available materials.
- Discussion of current methodologies. Introduction, identifying and selecting students. Pre-AP* preparation. Building support for your AP* program. AP* goals, standards and philosophies; articulation in your Spanish department. College Board materials; resources, texts and materials. Developing listening skills. Participants are assigned a sample lesson plan.
- Presentation of sample lesson plans. Grading holistically; simulated tape grading from student samples; ways to practice speaking in the classroom. Internet activities; visits to several web sites. Participants are assigned a lesson plan that integrates the skill areas of speaking and listening to share with the class tomorrow.
- Developing good reading skills. Using authentic materials to improve reading. Strategies for students. Ways to use literature in the classroom at elementary and intermediate levels. Preview of several very good videos that can be incorporated in the Language classroom.
- Strategies for teaching writing that culminate in AP*. Objectives on the AP* exam; how to evaluate student writing. Produce topics to take back with you to class. Break out groups; to work on “vertical teaming”; scope and sequence across all levels.
Wednesday and Thursday, the new; AP Spanish Literature and Culture Course
An in-depth look at the new course and exam; ideas and strategies for the organization of the new course; sample syllabi. Teachers will discuss the use of thematic instruction, literary terms and the inclusion of art and music.
Discussion will also focus on understanding and analyzing the different genres. What strategies and activities do we have for teaching poetry, short stories and theater?
How will teachers integrate art and music into the new course and how will these be assessed on the new exam. Participants will share best practices, discuss strategies and activities, and review new textbooks for the new course.
