CONSULTANT: Alma L. González
Alma L. González has been teaching in the public schools for over 30 years. Served as Department Head of the Foreign Language Department for 18 years. Has served as a Spanish AP Reader for 9 years and has served as a Table Leader as well. She has experience in teaching Spanish Language AP and Spanish Literature AP. She has been an adjunct professor at UTRGV. Has been a consultant for the College Board for over 25 years. Currently works with the University of Texas Rio Grande as a part time Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility exam tutor.
Course Description:
The objective of this AP Spanish Language and Culture institute will be on the structure and content of the revised AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam. There will be an introduction to the Course and Exam Description (CED) guide. We will dive deep into the Unit Guides and Instructional Approaches. This is an activity-based approach that will provide participants with useful strategies and activities for not only developing but maintaining a successful AP Spanish program. In addition, participants will learn to holistically assess student competencies in the target language as well as examine student performance. Furthermore, participants will learn how to navigate AP Classroom.
Learn strategies to incorporate literary works from the AP Spanish literature exam to improve interpretive/reading mode.
Furthermore, we will preview new resources and support for the AP course.
Overall, key instructional approaches will be to understand, plan and teach the course as well as assess student progress and understanding.

Course and Exam Description: Understanding, planning and teaching the course
Assessing student Progress and Understanding
Revise new course audit requirements for all teachers.
Digital Activation of the course
Strategies and Pedagogical Tools
AP Classroom/AP Daily: Unit guides, Personal Progress checks, Progress dashboards and Question Bank
Teaching by Design: Course Skills, Learning Objectives and Course Themes
Course Planning: Create a unit plan and lesson plan
Expanding AP opportunities for students- Big Future scholarships for students.
Revised thematic units for 2026-2027: Families and Communities, Language and Culture, Art and Creativity, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life and Global Contexts.
Revised FRQ’s for 2026-2027: Project presentation, Project Q&A (4 questions).

Please share your favorite activity, project, video, platform, Google Classroom extensions or ancillary materials to share with other participants on the last day. If you have a favorite and successful unit of study. Please have available lots of sticky notes and a couple of highlighters.
Bring a copy of your school calendar for the upcoming school year.
Bring your laptop as materials will be shared via Google Drive. In the event the institute moves to a virtual setting, Google Drive as well as Zoom link will be shared to the email address provided.
