I have been a teacher for 35 years, beginning my career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Federated States of Micronesia. I've taught in rural New Mexico and rural Alaska. For 22 years I worked at Rio Rancho High School in New Mexico (and retired at the end of May 2023). I hold a BA in English Literature from Rutgers University, and an MA in curriculum and instruction from the University of New Mexico. I've conducted workshops for The College Board, the National Math and Science Initiative, and Advanced Placement Initiatives all over the country. I've led professional development for over 25 years and have served in various leadership capacities at the AP World History Reading which I attended from 2006 - 2023. I also write curriculum for United States Academic Decathlon and write questions for both ETS and the College Board.
Course Description
The APSI in World History is designed to train teachers new to the course and to help more experienced teachers refine their course instruction. We will focus on how to teach the skills and reasoning processes, essay writing skills, and analyze the Course and Exam Description. Additionally, we will examine in detail the way the exam is scored and how the rubric is applied. Teachers will come away with a better understanding of how to interpret the writing requirements and how to teach them. Finally, we will spend some time helping all participants plan their course. We will walk through the course audit requirements and explore all the resources and testing material available on AP classroom.
